Shipu has more than 50 isles with a total area of 18.18 square kilometers.
Many of these isles have beautiful landscape. In addition there are many
grotesque rocks on these isles. These isles can be developed into best
tourist resorts.About two kilometers to the northeast of Shipu Port there is Huangcheng sand beach. Story goes that during the reign of Southern Song Dynasty a male body wearing a yellow gown embroidered with dragon patterns was found on the beach. The dead man was Emperor Zhao who jumped into the sea to die for his country. In order to pay their tribute to the emperor, the local people named the beach the Huangcheng (Royal City) beach. The beach is 1.8 kilometers long and 0.2 kilometers wide, and it looks like a new moon. The beach is washed by the sea in the east, connect with farm fields on the west. The sand of the beach is of the best quality. The slope of the beach is slow and even, and the water there is crystal clear. The beach is an ideal tourist resort. It has been designated as one of the 10 new scenic spots of Ningbo City.
The Yushan Archipelago to east of Shipu Port are composed of 54 isles and
reefs. Among these isles is Bei Yushan Isle, which lies 28 miles to the
east of Shipu, covers an area of 0.48 square kilometers, and is surrounded
by reefs. Along its shore there are many grotesque rocks that constitute
wonderful sights. The water around the isle is so clear that it can be seen
through to the bottom. The ancient people called it a fairy land on the sea.
On the isle there is a large lighthouse, which was erected in 1895 during the
reign of Emperor Kuangxu in the Qing Dynasty. In the waters around the Isle,
groupers abound and they can be fished just with a fishing rod.
With an area of 10.5 square kilometers, the Tantoushan Isle is the
biggest one of Shipu's isles. It is located about 6 miles off Shipu.
On the isle there is a big beach which extends several kilometers long,
and the water washing the beach is pure clear. In the sand of the beach
there grow a large quantity clams and other shell fish. It would be great
fun wandering on the isle.
Four kilometers off to the northeast of Shipu lies a small peninsular,
which local people call Banbianshan (half of a hill) Hill. Legend goes
that the legendary figure Pig Zhubajie of the famous Chinese classic novel
Pilgrimage to the West once passed by this place. Annoyed by the hill
that blocked his way, he raised his weapon---a nailed rake---to cut the
hill into two pieces. While half of the hill remains here, the other half
is in Taiwan. Henceforth the place got this name. The side of the hill is
very steep and smooth, as if it were cut up with a knife. In the west of
the hill, there is a giant piece of rock, which is hollow underneath and
therefore looks like a gate of an ancient city. Near it there is a reef,
which looks just like a sea-lion raising up its head.
