Geographic location
Shaoxing is located on the southeastern coast of China, the middle north part of Zhejiang. It is connected to Ningbo on the east and neighboring Hangzhou on the west. It is 232 kilome ters from Shanghai. Under its jurisdiction, there are two counties, three county-level cities and one district, with an area of 7901 square kilometers and a population of 4.29 million.

Famous Historical City
and Shaoxing City enjoys a history of 2400 years. It is one of the first 24 famous historical cultural cities approved by the China State Council. The muchtold ancient stories of Dayu passing his home three times but never went in during his watercontrol job, and the king of Yue kingdom sleeping on brushwood and tasting gall, planning on the restoration of his kingdom to wipe out the humiliation, both happened in Shaoxing.

In 1997, the GDP of the whole city reached 59.5 billion yuan, a 15% increase over the last year, with a per capita GDP of 13900 yuan, among the group of coastal economic developed areas. Three of the subordinating counties (or cities at county level) has been listed as top one hundred counties of the nation in terms of comprehensive power for three consecutive years, among which Shaoxing County has been among the top ten for twice.
