News and publishing circles are flourishing in Zhejinag. In 1998,
there was a sustained improvement of its news and publishing activities.
Presently in the province, there are 78 different newspapers, including 28 provincial
newspapers and 50 nwespapers at municipality and county levels, issuing 7.5
million copies. There are 192 different periodicals, which issue 7.27 million
copies. The Zhejiang Daily , founded in 1949, is the province's leading daily
newspaper, which has sponsored 6 newspapers and 2 periodicals, including the
Zhejiagn Daily, the Qianjiang Evening News, Economic Lives, Zhijiang Morning
News and News Practise. Among them, Zhejiagn Daily with an issue of 460,000
copies and Qianjiang Evening News with an issue of 690,000 copies, are the largest
in the province respectively. On Jan.1,1999, the network edition of the Zhejiang
Daily and all of its affiliated newspapers and periodicals were put on the Internet.
In addition, over 100 state-level media organizations, People's Daily, Guangming
Daily and China Daily, have set up branches or stationed reporters in Zhejiang.
Ta Kung Pao, Wen Wei Po in Hong Kong and Hong Kong Commercial Daily have sent
their correspondents in the province.
Zhejiang has set up provincial, municipal and county-level radio and television
broadcasting organizations, which is the only one in China at present. The province
has 103 radio & TV establishments, producing and broadcasting on 203 channels.
With the Zhejiang People's Broadcasting Station and the Zhejiang Television
Station as the core, ten specialized stations have been set up, broadcasting
on 6 radio channels and 6 television channels for 240 hours daily. The production
capability of the programs has been improved, meanwhile, the province's radio
and television transmission network has been promoted day by day. Two channels
of the Zhejiang People's Broad-casting Station and one channel of the Zhejiang
TV Station are beamed by satellite all over China as well as to 41 neighboring
countries and regions. 6,477 satellite ground stations have been established
in the province. 53 counties have been linked by transmission optical fiber
with their related municipalities. A cable transmission network of radio and
television in the province has been set up. In 1998, the main optical fiber
transmission network of the province was established. All in all, the province
has fairly good transmission and coverage of both radio and television broadcasting,
with satellite and iptical fiber transmission as its mainstays. At the moment,
radio reaches 86 percent of the province's residents, and television, 92.1 percent.
The Central People's Broadcasting Station and China Radio International have
also stationed reporters in the province.
There are 14 print publishing houses and 3 audio-visual publishing houses. The
province's approximate 200 enterprises with the Zhejiang Printing Group as its
mainstay, print publications using advanced technology. In 1998, a total of
3,431 titles rolled off the presses with a total printrun of 300 million copies,
and there was a marked improvement in the quality of publications. Over 850
titles published in Zhejiang won prizes at competitions above the provincial
level. Zhejiang publications have been consistently on the awards list at the
China National Book Competition, and the province has ranked as one of the best
provinces in the country frequently in the quantity of awards. At the three
most recent sessions of the National Book Competition, 5 titles published in
Zhejiang won prizes, putting the province ahead of the rest in the country.
Meanwhile, publishing circles in Zhejiang are actively pursuing cooperation
with their counterparts in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao, as well as foreign countries,
in the sphere of copyright trade.
