Zhejiang is well known throughout China for its wealth of tourist sites. It has the largest number of state-level scentic sports in the country-11 in all. They are the west Lake. Fuchun River, Xin'an River, the Thousand-islet Lakd(these last three count as one area), Mount Yandang, Nanxijiagn River, Mount Putuo, the Shengsi Islands, Mount Tiantai, Mount Mogan, Mount Xuedou, Shuanglong Cave and Mount Xiaodu. In addition, there are 35 province-level tourist spots, as well as the state-level toursm and vacation area of Zhejiang in Hangzhou and the eight province-level tourism and vacation areas of
Xianghu Lake in Xianshan, Qujiang River in Wenzhou and Mount Kuaiji in Shaoxing. The province is rich known famous tourist cities, its charming West Lake being famous throughout the world. Zhejiang has devoted great efforts to developing its tourism resources over a period of many years, and with the focus on sightseeing in Hangzhou, has gradually built up a tourism network with Hangzhou, has gradually built up a tourism network with Hangzhou as the center. To the east of Hangzhou are several sites of historical and cultural interest, including the 7000-year-old Humudu Culture relics, the ancient city of Shaoxing, the calligraphic shrine of the Orchid Pavilion and the Orchid Pavilion and the Tianyi Tower, the oldest library in China. Also located east of the capital are the scenic spots of Mount Xuedou at Xikou in Fenghua City, Mount Putuo and the Shengsi Islands. Meanwhile, to the west of Hangzhou are located the Qiantang River, the fuchun River, the xin'an River and the Thousand-islet Lake, which are all connected to the Mount Huangshan scenic area. There are also the fascinating cave groups known as the Yaolin Fairyland and Linsi Cave . Journeying south, one comes to Mount Jinhua, Mount Xiandu, Mount Tiantai, Nanxi River, Dongtou Island and Mount Yandang which is famous for its grotesque rocks and waterfalls. To the north, attractions include the world-renowned Qiantang River Tidal Bore, the Mount Mogan summer resort, the South Lake at Jiaxing and the Feiying Pagoda in Huzhou City. The ancient Grand Canal Links Hangzhou with tourist cities of Suzhou and Wuxi in Jinangsu Province. Trips to the famous mountains, rivers and lakes of western Zhejiang, to the Buddhist towns and water-lands of the eastern coast, to the fascinating mountains, rivers and lakes of the south and to the historic silk towns of the north, have become the essential tourist programs in the province.
Trips rich in special flavor are thriving in Zhejiang, such as trips to view the Qiantang River Tidal Bore,
calligraphy, fishing and Qigong(a form of ancient therapeutic exercise), as well as special trips with the themes of Farmer's Delight and Fishermen's delight. These programs have been proved popular with tourists from home and abroad. At the moment, Zhejiang has also arranged 17programs with special feature, which include ecological research trips to Mount Tianmu state-level nature preserve, known as Natural Botanical Gardentrips, to Taiji design village in Wuyi featuring ancient folk housing and primeval forests, a bamboo raft floating trip on the Nanxijiang River and to tea towns of north Zhejiang. Moreover, Zhejiang will arrange 12 festival activities, including the China International Festival of Viewing Qiantang River Tidel Bore and the Ninbo International Garment Festival. Zhejiang has begun to shift the emphasis of its tourism industry from simple sightseeing to holidaymaking together with sightseeing.
Along with the development of tourism undertakings, Zhejiang's basic tourism infrastructure and
security are daily improving, and its ability to accommodate visitors has been raised remarkably. Now the province has 380 hotels catering to foreign tourists, 175 of which have star ratings. There are 45 tourism agencies receiving overseas visitors, and 420 agencies handling domestic tourists. The province has a contingent of interpreters and guides able to work in several foreign languages and provide good service. Tourism is also facilitated by advanced transportation means, including air, rail, water and road travel. In 1998, Zhejiagn received some 820,000 overseas tourists and 42 million domestic tourists.
